about

the music on "electric karma" came into being when i was improvising with a tabla drum machine which cosmic hoffmann had bought for me in india -- reportedly at the same store where the beatles bought their instruments in the 1960s. all i was using for recording the tracks was a yamaha cs80, plus a little bit of mini moog, arp 2600, roland vocoder plus, and prophet vs here and there. the single tracks -- especially the longer ones -- were based around loops created on a pair of echoplexes to provide me with some kind of tamboura drone to improvise over on top. the loops got increasingly more complex, and on "electric karma" i not only had a variety of synthesisers churning in the background, i also used an audio trigger from the electronic tabla to trigger an arp sequencer, which, in turn, would control a massive sub-bass on the 2600 (i guess i was a bit inspired by the "sultan" album on fax records). when mastering the track, i tried to come to grips with the massive low-end, and hopefully it won´t make your subwoofer shift all the air out of your room.

"assassins" was originally released in early 2006 to accompany an article about me, published in germany´s "keyboards" magazine, and so far it has been my most widely spread track (something like 10,000 listeners, at a guess). this version here is slightly different and slightly longer as i indulged myself to get carried away a bit on the cs80´s ring modulator section. an excerpt from "electric karma" was available briefly as an add-on to another german publication, the "synthesizermagazin" in, i think, 2008. here, you will find it in its full glory (or not). i was originally intending to invite some session players to record some overdubs with acoustic instruments and raga chanting but this idea never got past the "i´d like to try this out" stage.

due to the improvised, straight-to-dat technique i used, there are some minor problems with line balancing and overloading the input of either the desk or the reverbs which i had to tweak on the fly while recording it. i tried my best to remove these from the music, apologies for some minor flaws. enjoy.
