about

when i purchased a yamaha cs80 synthesiser back in september 2000, i would never have thought that i would end up making a whole album with it. i had always wanted one since watching blade runner for the first time while recording my first cassette album rotation of galaxy back in 1989, and all of a sudden – or after many years of looking for one in vain, more like it – i had the chance to buy one from a film music composer and percussionist with the basel symphonic orchestra who was about to move to new premises in australia and wasn´t willing to take that 100 kg monstrosity with him. i still feel humble to have been privileged to use nearly all the instruments that vangelis had at his disposal when he recorded the blade runner score for ridley scott, located in his london-based nemo studio back then.
when the album was finally released in september 2005, i felt utterly relieved as i thought it would never make it to cd. i went out on a limb, borrowed some money from my parents and some friends to get the cd production funded, and i had a former fellow student design the sleeve which became utterly compelling work – too compelling for some who felt put off by the connotations the album sleeve provoked. the album was initially greeted with lot of enthusiasm as, apparently, many listeners had been waiting for a follow-up to my debut traces of the past. alas, they were in for something completely different.
yet, it helped me reach an entirely different audience, with the most satisfying thing being positively name-checked on gary willoughby´s bladezone.com website which is dedicated to all things blade runner (he even showed up in the documentary that accompanied the final cut dvd release). there were many orders from people who are as enthusiastic about the film and the score as i am, and many were blown away by how authentic my music sounded, and how well it captured the spirit of a (possible) sequel to the film.
the bonus tracks were either not included due to a lack of space on the album or replaced by other tracks which were recorded at a later stage. for a start, der barde replaced der ronin (which was originally recorded during the same session as die burg), der reverend was an alternative take of das lied vom ende (and previously only available in abridged form on e-dition #12), and centre pompidou was one of the first recordings i made with the cs80. yes, i´ve always kind of liked beaubourg by vangelis.
