This is a unique work of art, a different musical language than any preceeding string quartet. It has all the contemporary classical qualities that a demanding listener should expect, and it is also infused by what music brought us in the second half of the last century and the 21st century, that is rock'n'roll with all its fourth world rhythmic and melodic wealth.
Favorite track: Zauberberg.

First of all, it sounds great. A very clean and intentional-sounding recording and wonderful performance. I haven't been able to sit down with the score yet to work out the numbers, but I love how it evolves, it's almost as if the pieces are speaking to each other - A very cohesive and enthralling experience. It feels like a Stanley Kubrick film - Heartland is a full meal for the ears and the active listener's imagination.

A fascinating exploration of a vast sonic landscape! Reuter’s music is always innovative; whether on the most modern of instruments or, as here, on ancient ones. Complex, layered, and beautiful, this music resonates deeply and forges new pathways in the classical form. Amazingly, there are no repeated phrases in these pieces, giving the listening an thrilling ride of unexpected twists. This will likely end up as my favorite album of the year! Stunning work!

This singular work for string quartet further bears witness to the creative genius of Markus Reuter. I'm so struck by the phrasing and expression of the Matangi Quartet, which is testimony of the amazing translation from idea to recording. Even though each piece can easily stand on its own, please make time to listen in one sitting. Heartland is a journey worth taking.
Favorite track: Zauberberg.

For years I have said that Markus Reuter is not only the greatest living composer you have never heard of but also the Erik Satie of the 21st Century. This album supports my statements.
Hauntingly beautiful music!

After years of preparation and planning, Solaire Records is proud and excited to present 'Heartland', Markus Reuter's first string quartet. The album sees Markus further explore his algorithmically-supported composing technique to create a sonic language that will surprise even long-standing supporters.
After spending months listening to most of music history's major string quartets, Markus ultimately decided to break with tradition and approach things from an entirely unique angle. Working closely with Oval's Markus Popp, the tracks were built using a pool of self-referential musical fractals. By combining them into deeply layered structures, every single bar of music is related to what precedes and follows it, even though there is not a single mechanical repetition in these pieces.
Performed by the prestigious Matangi Quartet and recorded by award-winning producer Dirk Fischer, Heartland is a journey to the borders of melody and harmony: Driving, sensual, serene and moving.

Another stellar release from this long-lived ensemble. Though the King Crimson influence is obvious & that comparison unavoidable, these guys have made many great recordings that can't be categorized as 'mere copies'. The perfect balance of aggressive riffing and serene soundscapes. Stephen Roberts
